Veterans Day - Veterans Walk of Flags

Veterans Day - Veterans Walk of Flags

The Fergus Falls Veterans Walk of Flags began September 2, 2002. Perrie Sheldon came up with the idea after visiting his son and daughter-in-law in Sheldon, Iowa and viewing the town’s “Avenue of Flags”, where his son had purchased a flag in Perrie’s name to honor him. He thought that would be a great idea for Fergus Falls and along with co-founder, Stan Morrill, had various meetings and discussions with the City of Fergus Falls. The late Mayor Kelly Ferber gave the project the go-ahead. Soon after that it was named “Veterans Walk of Flags” and would start in Veterans Memorial Park in Fergus Falls. Flags were sold at $75 a piece to honor any veteran, living or deceased, who served in any war with an Honorable Discharge. At present, the Walk of Flags is maxed out at 1,862 flags and are displayed in 10 areas around town: Veterans Park, NP Park, Court House, Junius Ave., Union Ave., Wright Park, Neese Park, City Hall Park, Friberg/Summit Ave., and the Minnesota Veterans Home. Flags are displayed 10 times per year.

They are put up around 7:15 a.m. by volunteers working out of 4 different trailers and taken down at 4:30.

Volunteers are always welcome!
